Vinnie Brice – Software Developer

Vinnie Brice shares his experience of being a Software Developer – the best bits about the job and advice for anyone interested in the role…

What does your role entail?

I deliver and maintain bespoke microservices that use APIs (a set of rules that allow different software applications to communicate with each other). I also assist in the training of new Software Developers at Mercator.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work in an agile team where we look to understand, create, and enhance services for our clients. I code mostly in Scala and demonstrate walk-throughs of the deliverables through a presentation of either the front-end of the application, or by showing examples of back-end functionality. We consistently have retrospective sessions to ensure that good practice is maintained, mistakes are recognised and can then be improved upon.

What sort of clients have you worked with?

My main client is HMRC so we provide services that affect users all over the UK.

What’s the best bit about your job?

I really enjoy the team collaboration – both on site with the client and at Mercator. My ideas are always heard and this makes me feel very validated.

What’s Mercator Digital like to work for?

Mercator really is a great company to work for. They’ve given me amazing support and opportunities for development of both my skills and career as a whole. I’ve been provided with all the training needed to become the Developer I am today. Although I’m part of a team for an external client, Mercator doesn’t fail to make me feel part of its ever-growing family.

Any advice for people wanting to be a Developer?

Whether you’re looking to start a new path in software, re-visit an old skill or find a change of pace, Mercator can offer the training and opportunity to become an excellent Software Developer.
